Patrick Walsh

Patrick Walsh

Assistant Professor in Paediatric Immunology

Having earned a PhD in biochemistry at UCC in 2001, Professor Walsh conducted his postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Professor Laurence Turka at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2006, he accepted a position as principal scientist in R&D at GlaxoSmithKline in Philadelphia, before returning to Ireland as a senior scientist and programme manager at the Immunology Research Centre at TCD in 2008. In January 2011, he joined the NCRC as a lecturer in Paediatric Immunology and Principal Investigator on the Paediatric Research in Translational Immunology (PRiTI) programme, which coincided with his receipt of a Science Foundation Ireland President of Ireland Young Researcher award in 2011.

The research conducted by Professor Walsh’s group investigates the mechanisms which control immunity and tolerance, particularly in the context of autoimmune and inflammatory disease conditions. They take a translational research approach, using both preclinical models, and patient samples, to investigate novel mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases such as psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease, with the goal of identifying novel targets for therapeutic intervention. Professor Walsh’s laboratory is located at the National Children’s Research Centre at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, allowing close collaboration with paediatric clinician scientists to facilitate these studies. He also collaborates with colleagues in the pharmaceutical drug development industry.

Current areas of investigation include the role of novel Interleukin-1 family members in inflammation and autoimmune disease, as well as understanding the mechanisms through which interleukin-2 acts in the maintenance of immune tolerance. His aim is to translate his groups findings towards the development of improved therapeutics for autoimmune and inflammatory disease in patients.
