Conway Fellow/ Lecturer

Dr Madeline Murphy is a Conway Fellow and Principal Investigator in the School of Medicine, UCD. She leads a translational medical research group within the Conway Institute, with a keen interest in translating her research findings towards development of innovative diagnostics and therapeutics.  Her major research interest is to understand the biology that leads to scarring and illness. Her current research focus is to understand the biology of scarring that leads to narrowed airways resulting in breathing difficulties for babies and children. Her long-term goal is to use this understanding of disease biology to create new treatments. She also investigates breast cancer and diabetic kidney disease.

Investigation into prevention of fibrotic scar formation as treatment for subglottic stenosis

Premature babies and sick children that have difficulty breathing may have a small tube placed into their airways to help them breathe. The risk of damage to the airway with this treatment is usually very low. However, for some children scarring of the airway can occur just below the vocal chords (subglottis). This can cause the airway to narrow (stenosis). The exact cause of the scarring (fibrosis) is not yet known. The most severe cases can have 70-100% narrowing of the airway. Current treatment requires surgery to (a) insert a tracheostomy tube below the narrow area to help breathing (b) expand the airway with the baby’s own cartilage or (c) resection of the narrow portion. This research is focusing on understanding the biology that leads to the scarring. The long-term goal is to use our understanding of the pathophysiology to create a new treatment to prevent this fibrosis and ultimately stop the narrowing of the airways.
