His work on the prophylactic use of Defibrotide contributed to clinical studies and EMA/FDA approval for the treatment of veno-occlusive disease following SCT. In 2007 he was appointed to the Chair for Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Research at the University of Munich. His major research focus is on endothelial and mesenchymal stem cells in transplant medicine and oncology, i.e. the monitoring and preventing endothelial-specific adverse immunological reactions in transplant settings and the development of new tumour-specific anti-angiogenic strategies in cancer. He has given more than 50 invited lectures, and has authored /co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications.

The in-vitro risk stratification and pharmacological prevention of endothelial-specific immune reactions in individual donor-recipient pairs post allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Bone marrow transplant is the only curative option for certain leukaemias and other hereditary disorders many of which can be fatal in childhood. In the paediatric population HSCT has a 25% mortality rate. Endothelial damage plays a role in transplant related mortality from veno-occlusive disease of the liver, thrombotic microangiopathy and graft versus host disease. Damage to the endothelium ensues from toxicity of the conditioning chemoradiotherapy and alloreactivity of donor lymphocytes, a subset of which are specific to endothelium. Aim: To develop an individualised, risk-adapted approach to endothelial protection that can then be utilised in vivo to minimise endothelial related complications of transplant and transplant-related-mortality.
