Gavin McGowan is the Quality and Regulatory Affairs Manager at the National Children’s Research Centre. Gavin joined the NCRC in May 2018, in this new key supporting role, to provide dedicated expertise in quality management and regulatory affairs to both the Children’s Clinical Research Unit and the Haematology/Oncology Clinical Trials Unit at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin.

Gavin holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the National University of Ireland Galway. Following the completion of his degree in 2003, Gavin joined the medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific Ireland, where he manufactured coronary stents and provided support in the review of quality system documentation to ensure regulatory inspection readiness. In 2005, Gavin took up a dual role in the Haematology and the Histology laboratories at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where he provided assistance to laboratory teams in the processing of patient blood and tissue samples. He also worked closely with the laboratory Quality Manager in implementing the laboratory quality system and received certification in the auditing of biomedical laboratories. In 2007, Gavin joined the Quality Management Systems section of the Health Products Regulatory Authority (then known as the Irish Medicines Board) and provided support to departments to implement and maintain the quality management system. Gavin subsequently held a number of scientific / technical and management positions at the HPRA, working in both general medical devices and in-vitro diagnostic medical device teams. In parallel, Gavin undertook a Masters in Biomedical Science, via distance learning, at the National University of Ireland Galway and graduated in 2017. In his current role in the NCRC, Gavin works closely with the Clinical Research Project Manager to provide support for paediatric clinical trials and studies.
