The Children’s Clinical Research Unit is located on the grounds of Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin, with offices and facilities in both the hospital and NCRC. Our Unit operates with the support of the key hospital departments such as Clinical Engineering, Paediatric Phlebotomy, and the Diagnostic Laboratory.

In addition to the hospital’s clinical facilities, the following are accessed during the conduct of studies:

Sample Management Facilities

  • A patient proximate sample processing room based within the hospital for rapid processing and short-term storage of clinical samples; it is equipped with a refrigerated centrifuge, microbiological safety cabinet and temperature monitored fridge.
  • The state of the art laboratory at the NCRC houses a biosample storage facility with temperature monitored -20°C and -80°C freezers fitted with an electronic alarm system.

Pharmacy Dispensary

The Trial Pharmacy service is based in the CHI at Crumlin Pharmacy and includes temperature controlled and monitored storage space for investigational medicinal products.

Administration Space

  • Research Offices with controlled access
  • Desk space and internet access for Clinical Research Associates during monitoring visits
  • Seminar Room with projector and teleconferencing facilities

Lung Clearance Index (LCI) Machine

This new Exhalyzer D machine introduces a non-invasive method of measuring lung function and is being used to study the lungs of children with Cystic Fibrosis
